GCC season ends in sectionals to El Camino; Choi and Wilkerson earn top conference honors
The 2019 season ended for the GCC Baseball Team on Saturday May 18 to El Camino College by a 7-3 score. El Camino won the first game of the CCCAA sectionals 14-2 last Friday in the best two out of three series. The WSC East Champion Vaqueros ended the season 30-17 and were seeded No. 4 in the playoffs. El Camino improved to 38-7 and advanced to the state playoffs in Fresno May 25-27.
Several players from the 2019 earned All-WSC East honors including sophomore catcher Michael Choi who was named WSC East Player of the Year, sophomore starting pitcher Dexter Wilkerson who was named WSC East Pitcher of the Year and Interim Head Coach Alex Kocol was named WSC East Coach of the Year.
All-Western State Conference East
Michael Choi-WSC East Player of the Year and First Team Catcher
Choi led the conference in hitting at a .469 clip with 30 hits in 64 at bats including seven doubles, two homers and a team high 23 RBI with no errors in 100 fielding chances as the backstop in 17 games.
Dexter Wilkerson-WSC East Pitcher of the year and First Team Starting Pitcher
Wilkerson was the mainstay of the Vaqueros staff with a 5-1 conference record in seven appearances and 34 innings pitched. He averaged nine strikeouts per nine innings pitched and allowed just seven earned runs for an ERA of 1.85.
