GCC Tennis Player David Martirosian competes in 2022 ITA Cup in Georgia
ROME, GA. – After battling it out in Regional Tournaments across the country over these past few weeks, hundreds of the top Division II, III, NAIA, and JUCO men's and women's players all converged in Rome, Georgia for the playing of the 2022 ITA Cup.
Surviving some rainy conditions in the morning from the Rome Tennis Center, day one of the ITA Cup saw David Martirosian from Glendale College go up against number 1 seed Taco Takeshi from Cowley County Community College. In a close first set, Martirosian would gain a set point at 6-5 before losing the first set 7-6 and losing the second set 6-1 for a 7-6, 6-1 loss.
Moving into day two, Martirosian would go against Vila Emilio from Tyler Jr. College. After a slow start losing the first set 6-2, Martirosian would bounce back with a 2-0 lead before Vila would regain the break taking it to 2-2. Martirosian again would break to go up 4-2, before Vila would bounce back and take the match 6-2, 6-4.
Into day three, Martirosian would match up against Paul Gayk from Mississippi Gulf Coast College but during an early break in the first set, Martirosian would have to retire from his match with a forearm injury at 1-2.
David Martirosian is also the first person from Glendale College men's tennis program to compete in the National ITA Cup. From September 30 to October 2, Martirosian competed in the ITA Juco Men's & Women's Northern California Regional Championships. Martirosian would be seeded 1 in the tournament and making the finals before losing to Ravi Nelson from American River College. Due to making the finals, Martirosian was awarded entry into the ITA Cup.
During the 2022 season David would go 15-4 in singles and 19-3 in doubles. David would also win the WSC conference tournament in doubles and was voted MVP in the WSC conference and awarded first team in singles. David would also finish All-American in both singles and doubles for the first time at Glendale since 2011. David also received the ITA Rookie of the Year for both his results and his sportsmanship on and off the court.
