The Vaqueros took part in the Southern California Preliminaries this past Friday at Moorpark College. Shannon Turner took 2nd in the 800m preliminaries in a time of 1:54.33 to advance to the finals next week. Julius Largaespada took 7th in the 1500m in a time of 4:00.20 to also advance. He also ran the 800m in a time of 2:04.64. Others competing in the 1500m but falling shy of advancing to the finals were Kevin Vasquez (4:13.70) and Sheldon Watanabe (4:14.97). In the 3000m steeplechase, Luis Juarez took 3rd overall in a time of 9:37.20 to advance. In the 10000m, Jorge Ramirez took 22nd in a time of 35:42.94. The men's 4x400 relay team took 15th in a time of 3:31.60. The two throwing events contested that were finals were shot put and hammer. Kevin Gomez was not able to get a fair throw in hammer to secure his spot at the state meet, and he took 17th in hammer with a throw of 39'2.25". Gerardo Becerra was the other thrower competing in the shot put, and he had a toss of 36'9". Lincoln Guerrero also took part in the hammer getting a throw of 111'8". On the women's side, Karla Sanchez took 9th in the 800m in a time of 2:25.97 to advance. She also took 2nd in the 1500m in a time of 5:01.55. Destiny Lopez took 11th in the 10000m 42:56.97. In the field events, Xochilt Monfil had a toss of 104'4" in the hammer throw. Next week, Glendale will travel back to Moorpark College for the Finals.
