First race of the season at the CSUF Mark Covert Classic

The Men's and Women's Cross-Country teams concluded their first race of the season at the CSUF Mark Covert Classic in Carbon Canyon Park Saturday September 1. The Vaqueros fought a tough race, not only competing against community colleges, but also against Division 1 and Division 2 schools, as well as top unattached runners.

            On the men's side, the Vaqueros finished 6th among the 14 total teams, and finished 2nd among the community colleges behind only Mt. San Antonio College. Sophomore Akol Malong (26:02.5) and freshman Marcelo Ramirez(26:34.3) led the way to finish 17th and 30th among a total of 180 runners, followed by freshmen Albert Serrano (26:47.2) and Spencer Geck (27:07.6) with a 37th and 47th place finish. Sophomore Antonio Arroyo (27:11.2), freshman Kevin Keller (27:29.1) and sophomore Carlos Rivera (27:45.8) followed with a 39th, 50th and 73rd place finish.

            On the women's side, the Vaqueros were led by sophomore Jennifer Perez-Cazarez (19:33.0) and freshman Noemi Apreza (20:00.0) to give the women a 22nd and 29th place finish. They were followed by sophomores Genesis Siam-Alvarez (20:21.9) for a 36th place finish, Daisy Romero (20:23.0) for a 38th place finish, freshman Pheobe Forsyth (20:26.0) for a 39th place finish, and sophomores Jazmin Negro (20:50.9) and Rosalina Castro (21:37.0) for a 50th and 64th place finish to help the Vaqueros finish 4th among a total of 11 teams (1st among community colleges) to top Mt. SAC.

            The Vaqueros will be racing again at the Fresno Cross Country Invitational this Saturday, September 8th at Woodward Park (Fresno).
