Glendale inches closer to conference title with a 60-43 win over Citrus

The numbers easily tell the story of GCC's 60-43 win over Citrus Wednesday in the Verdugo Gym. Glendale got the best of the visiting Owls in all four quarters and never trailed in the game and even got a boost heading into the fourth quarter when sophomore Melissa Sandoval hit a half  court shot at the buzzer to give the Lady Vaqs a 43-28 cushion heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

The victory for Glendale boosted its Western State Conference East record to 7-0, two games ahead of Citrus with three to play, and 19-4 overall. They were led in this game by the sophomore tandem of point guard Cheyenne Jankulovski with 16 points and five assists and forward Sylvia Vartazarian with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Vartazarian only had two points and four rebounds at the half but asserted herself in the second half by continuing to force the action in the middle time and time again to grab six important offensive rebounds, hit a three pointer and nail five of six critical free throws.

Haley Wilson added eight big points off the bench and Marlene Salazar added seven key boards to help keep the Owls at bay and help Head Coach Joel Weiss record his 51st career victory in less than three years.

Glendale continues WSC East play Saturday Feb. 16 at Antelope Valley at 7 pm.
