GCC Track and Field competed in Occidental College Relays March 11
The track & field teams competed at the Occidental College Spring Break Classic over the weekend. On the men's side, Julius Largaespada had a huge PR in the 1500m, winning it with a time of 3:51.78. That time also gives him the State lead in the event. Also taking part in the 1500m was Kevin Vasquez who finished with a time of 4:07.56 and Jeremiah Galloway who ran a time of 4:12.28. In the 800m, Alexander Ibarra finished with a time of 2:12.64. Ezequiel Soto competed in his first 3000m Steeplechase of the season and took 15th with a time of 10:08.19. In the 100m, Xavier Rojas finished in 12th place with a time of 11.36, while Aaron Flores took 15th with a time of 11.45. In the 400m, Renee Cedeno took 20th in a time of 52.13, and Sean Miller finished in 38th with a time of 54.30. In the field events, Kevin Gomez took 4th place in hammer with a throw of 41.30m, while taking 12th in shot put with a throw of 11.62m. Lincoln Guerrero had a 7th place finish in hammer with a toss of 39.42m. John Westwood had an 11.50m throw in shot put and a 30.81m toss in discus. Julius Dawoodtabar finished in 15th place in discus with a throw of 31.06m and shot put with a throw of 9.79m. In javelin, Willie Mejia took 8th with a throw of 40.43m and Zaven Shakenians took 16th with a throw of 23.29m.
On the women's side, Destiny Lopez also had a huge PR in the 5000m running a time of 17:56.84, which puts her 5th in the State for the event. Samantha Medrano also ran a PR in the 5000m with a time of 18:46.97. In the 1500m, Norma Martinez finished with a time of 5:51.89. In the field events, Kaylyn Guerra took 4th place in the discus with a throw of 33.68m. In javelin, Vanessa Portillo took 2nd place with a toss of 31.61m. The team will have a BYE week and then will travel to Bakersfield for the Western State Conference Inland meet on Friday, March 24.
