Glendale advances to home tourney final with 59-44 win over Riverside

In route to their eighth straight win Thursday over Riverside College, the GCC Women's Basketball Team  learned a few things. Yes they led the game from start to finish again but their suffocating defense was the deciding factor in its 59-44 win to propel them into  the championship game Friday against Trade Tech College. Trade Tech is 12-1 and ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 2 in Southern California and beat Ventura College 65-58 in the championship semifinals Thursday. GCC is now 10-1 and is ranked No. 12 in Southern California.

Glendale led 12-8 after the first quarter and 32-23 at halftime but it was its stifling defense in the third quarter that forced Riverside into 7.1 percent shooting on 1-14 from the field that helped spell the end for the visiting Tigers as they trailed 44-25 after three quarters. Cheyenne Jankulovski led the charge for the Lady Vaqs with 19 points and three assists. Marlene Salazar added seven points and Sylvia Vartazarian added six points and 10 rebounds and Angel Castro had nine points on three, three-pointers.
