Baseball Drops Playoff Opener to Glendale, Best-of Three Series Continues Saturday

Cuesta Baseball came out flat in the opening game of their best-of-three series against #14-seed Glendale.  Both teams went down in order in their first at bat, but Glendale earned the game's initial score the next inning off a Cuesta error, while the Cougars sent up ten batters before posting their first baserunner off an error.  Luckily, Third Baseball Mikey Bell followed that error with a two-run home run to get the Cougars on the scoreboard in the 4th inning.  Unfortunately, Cuesta's Bullpen could not slow down the bats of visiting Glendale.  The Vaqueros scored in eight of the nine innings, including a nine-run, 9th inning to cap a 25-6 victory. Cuesta tried to rally in the final frame as Bell drove in two more runs on a double, before being plated on Anthony Cannavino's RBI-single.  Cuesta collected five of their ten hits on the day in the 9th inning.  Bell and Rightfielder Jack Clothier were the only Cuesta players to enjoy a multi-hit game.  Bell went 3-for-5, including a double and a home run, while scoring twice and driving in four runs.  Clothier was 2-for-5, with a double, and was driven in twice by Bell.  On the hill, Reliever Bobby Bangs was only one of the Cougars' seven pitchers to deny a run to the Vaqueros.  Glendale boasted eight players with multi-hit games, including a game-high four hits by Third Baseman Ethan Pena.  Glendale collected 24 hits in route to their second highest scoring total of the season; they previously scored 32 runs against a sub-.500 Antelope Valley team in WSC-South play.  Today's loss puts the Cougars one game away from elimination.

Cuesta hosts Glendale tomorrow as their CCCAA First Round Playoff Series continues at 11 AM.  If needed, a third and final game is scheduled for 3 PM.  Today's game marked the Cougars' 100th Regional Playoff game since 1990.  The Cougars are currently even with 50 wins and 50 losses.  Additionally, the Cougars posted a 2-8 record in their four trips to the CCCAA Final Four, with the last one coming in 2002.
