Looking back at the weekend series for Glendale Community College and College of the Canyons in the first round of the Southern California Regional Baseball Playoffs May 6-7, a few pivotal moments stood out for the WSC South rivals.
The first came in the bottom of the eighth inning in Friday's game when GCC scored four times to break a 1-1 tie to win 5-1. Another came in Saturday's second game when Canyons trailed 6-4 and pushed across single runs in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings to win 7-6. Lastly in the final game Saturday, Glendale took an 8-3 lead before the visitors tied the game at 8-8 in the fifth inning. GCC came up with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom half of the same inning to take a 10-8 lead and eventually won the game 12-9 and the series two games to one.
Having to get back on the field approximately 30 minutes after the extra innings loss,
Glendale scored runs early and often in the second game Saturday as Joey Craig and Artin Biageyian had three hits each with Craig hitting a grand slam in the second inning and a solo homer by Biageyian in the fifth gave GCC a 10-8 lead. Isaiah Velazco had two hits including solo homer and Adrian Gonzalez had two hits including a triple and a double. Relief pitcher Matt Tamura got the win in relief of starter Julian Jaramillo and Aaron Treloar and Chris Lozano also took the mound for the Vaqs.
Now 36-7, the WSC South Champion Vaqs now move into the second round of the regionals and will host El Camino College, 31-11, in a best two out of three series that starts Friday May 13 at 2 pm at Stengel Field with a second game scheduled for noon Saturday. A third game would be played Sunday at a time TBD.
