In a game of several missed opportunities and miscues, the Glendale College Football Team has quite a bit to be proud of despite losing its season 2019 season opener 27-21 to Antelope Valley College Sept. 7 at Sartoris Field.

The Vaqueros trailed 7-0 after its first offensive series when a punt from Chris Lee was blocked and returned 34 yards for a touchdown by Jaylin Cochran but GCC came right back with 5:23 ;eft in the first quarter when quarterback Nathan Eldridge hooked up with Jalen Lawrence on a 14 yard scoring play to make it 7-7.  After Antelope Valley made it 14-7 in the second quarter, Lawrence hooked up with Eldridge again on a 56 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-14 with 2:40 left in the half.

But while the Vaqueros were seeing some success on offense despite a stalled run game, it couldn't overcome 14 penalties for 137 yards of its own and wound up trailing the visitors 27-17 late in the game before backup quarterback Jorge Amaya hooked up with Lawrence for his third score with 18 seconds in the game to make the final count 27-21. Lawrence finished with 10 catches for 104 catches and returned three kickoffs for 73 yards. Michael Stanford led the defensive charge with 13 tackles, 12 solo and Christian Alvarez had six tackles, broke up three passes and had one interception.
