GCC Men and Women's Track and Field compete in the WSC Relays Feb. 18

The Vaqueros competed in their first conference meet of the season at the WSC Relays hosted by Antelope Valley College. On the men's side, the Distance Medley Relay team took 3rd place with a time of 10:48.56. The 4x800m relay squad took the victory in a time of 8:13.53. The 4x400m relay team took 7th with a time of 3:45.90. There was a total of seven runners that competed in the 5000m race, with Julius Largaespada taking 1st with a time of 16:06.73. Luis Juarez (16:12.07) and Jorge Ramirez (16:13.88) crossed the finish line in 3rd and 4th place, respectively. Others taking part in the race was Abdiel Quero (16:49.56), Morgan Faunce (16:54.73), Alfredo De Anda (17:16.64), and Kevin Kiely (18:37.29). In the field events, Joziah Hernandez made his pole vault debut clearing 10'0" for 4th place. Kevin Gomez took victories in both the shot put (38'8.25") and the hammer (145'5"). Lincoln Guerrero was the other Vaquero to compete and PR in the hammer with a toss of 111'10". Others who continue to improve in the shot put were John Westwood (34'2.75"), Julius Dawoodtabar (33'10.75"), Michael Bomar (31'2.5"), and Lincoln Guerrero (29'9.25"). In the discus, Gerrardo Becerra took 3rd place with a toss of 121'5". Other discus throwers included: John Westwood (105'1"), Lincoln Guerrero (97'8"), Julius Dawoodtabar (90'1"), Michael Bomar (87'8"), and Garno Amirian (65'4"). The javelin had two competitors: Julio Aguayo (129'5") who went on to win the event and Edward Jones (119'6") who made his season debut.

On the women's side, Norma Martinez would be the only Vaquero represented in the 5000m race where she finished in a time of 22:29.75. The 4x800m relay team took 2nd place in a time of 10:35.88. The Distance Medley Relay team also took 2nd place in a time of 13:34.22. Vanessa Portillo went on to win the javelin for a second straight meet with a throw of 97'8". She also competed in the shot put with a mark of 30'7.75". In the hammer, Xochilt Monfil (98'1") had a personal best and a 4th place finish. She also competed in the discus with a toss of 73'6". Glendale will travel back to Antelope Valley College for the WSC South meet on Friday the 25th.
