The occasion of the 30th win of the year for the GCC Baseball Team Saturday May 3 may have been lost slightly amongst the excitement of winning the best two of three game series against Long Beach City College in the opening round series in the Southern California Regionals May 2-3 against Long Beach City College at Stengel Field and the amount of water coming from a threatening sky and water jugs being tossed around following the series clinching third game win.
The series breakdown is as follows:
Friday May 2-GCC 7, LBCC 0: WSC South Pitcher of the Year Matt Cuccias pitched seven strong innings to get the win with Juan Rodriguez pitching two innings to preserve the shutout win. Jackson Lyons paced the offense with three hits and three RBI including a double and scored twice. Jordan Viramontes had a homer and a double for his two hits and Daniel Ruiz and Ethan Munoz also had two hits each.
Saturday May 3-LBCC 10, GCC 9: The Vikings come from behind win can on a walk off two run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning after GCC jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the third inning. David Lozano had two hits including a home run and two RBI and Daniel Ruiz homered and Alex Dolan doubled. John Trainor started and pitched four innings and Maximo Newhart, Jorge Martinez and Diego Barajas also took the mound in relief.
Saturday May 2-GCC 12, LBCC 5: GCC took the series clinching win thanks to a strong outing by starting pitcher Liam Thatcher wh struck out seven in his 6.1 innings of work and was supported in relief by Cris Banuelos, Juan Rodriguez and Luis Fernandez. Alex Dolan, Jordan Viramontes, Ethan Pena, Ethan Kearney and James Harrington all had two hits each with Pena and Harrington hitting homers and David Lozano, Viramontes and Kearney hitting doubles.
Glendale will play in the Southern California Super Regionals May 8-10 at Cerritos College and will face El Camino College in the double elimination three team series opener at 11 am Thursday with more game times determined by wins and losses throughout the series. The WSC South Champion Vaqs are ranked No. 5 in Southern California and are 30-12-1 this season.
