Glendale beat L.A Southwest College 35-6; QB Nick Garcia sets school record for touchdowns and surpasses 4,000 yards in passing yardage
On the eve before the eve of Halloween, some strange occurrences were taking place before, during and after the Metro League game between host Glendale College and the visitors from Los Angeles Southwest College Saturday October 29 at Sartoris Field.
For starters, the 1 pm game started 45 minutes late as the visiting Cougars did not arrive until just before the scheduled game time because of a transportation miscommunication. Then the visitors with under 30 players in uniform fell behind 28-0 early and trailed 35-6 at halftime. That score became the final outcome as a meeting between the two head coaches, officials and Southern California Football Association Commissioner Jim Sartoris ultimately deciding to halt the game at that point because several players from LASW were injured and continuing would risk further health and safety issues for the visitors.
The 35-6 final score in two quarters resulted in GCC improving to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in league and showcased sophomore quarterback Nick Garcia, who achieved two career milestones with five touchdown passes giving him a school record 50 for his two years as a Vaqueros and also surpassing the 4,000-career yard passing total with 218 yards in the air on 14 of 21 and 4,020 yards for his career. Mike Frost held the previous mark of 44 TD passes in 1998-999 and his 5,192 yards over that time span remains the passing mark career mark. Artis Cole caught six passes for 81 yards and Caleb Snowden caught two TD's and three for 63 yards. Percy Jacksson had two tackles for a loss and a sack and Chase Center had a tackle for a loss and a sack.
In the final regular season home game of the year Saturday Nov. 5 at 1 pm, Glendale will host Citrus College in a battle of first place teams with the winner likely to earn the Metro League Title outright or at least a share.
