In a season that has been full of challenges, the GCC Men's Soccer Team played possibly its best game of the season in a 3-0 shutout win over College of the Canyons Oct. 18 in its conference opener. WSC play for Glendale was supposed to start Tuesday Oct. 15 at home against Santa Monica but a campus emergency at SMC caused the game to be postponed and rescheduled for Nov. 10.
"We've faced some setbacks recently-injuries and illness, and tough losses. Friday, we reset our energy and mindset and we played with determination and team work that led to our success beating Canyons 3-0, " said Head Coach Laura Matsumoto. "One important factor was the vocal leadership on the field from some of our veteran sophomores-Luis Zepeda and Alik Kolsuzyan, This team continues to see glimpses of their great potential and the coaches will continue to push the team towards growth and success.''
Glendale got off to a quick start against the visiting Cougars when Luis Zepeda scored on an assist from Cesar Crispo at the 4:30 mark of the first half for the 1-0 lead. Mateo Grasso scored on an unassisted goal at the 46:38 mark of the second half to make it 2-0 and then Mubarak Abdulai scored at 52:16 on an assist by Aleksan Kolsuzyan to complete the scoring at 3-0. Goalie Hayk Tovmasyan had six saves to highlight the defensive effort.
GCC continues WSC play this week at Citrus College Tuesday Oct. 22 at 4 pm and plays at Antelope Valley College Friday Oct. 25 at 7 pm.
