GCC Track and Field Team hosts Vaquero Classic home meet Saturday April 9

 

Glendale hosted its first track and field meet since 2019 this past weekend, and it was a successful one. Luis Juarez ran a huge PR in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:40.70 which would put him in a tie for 4th in the state. He also ran a PR in the 800m with a time of 1:59.33. Shannon Turner won the 800m and ran a lifetime best of 1:54.34 which puts him 6th in the state for the event. Also taking part in the 800m were Roberto Morales (2:00.17), Julius Largaespada (2:01.52), Kevin Vasquez (2:02.15), Morgan Faunce (2:17.40), and Kevin Kiely (2:45.16). In the 1500m, Roberto Morales took 2nd place with a time of 4:01.02. Also running the 1500m were Julius Largaespada (4:09.28), Kevin Vasquez (4:14.76), Sheldon Watanabe (4:18.55), Morgan Faunce (4:27.32), and Kevin Kiely (5:12.20). The 5000m race had Jorge Ramirez (15:56.95) who took 4th place and Abdiel Quero (16:10.69) who took 8th place. In the field events, Joziah Hernandez took 7th in the pole vault clearing 10'10". In shot put, Gerardo Becerra took 6th with a toss of 40'10.15". Kevin Gomez finished behind Becerra with a throw of 40'9". Others in shot put were John Westwood (38'2.75"), Lincoln Guerrero (33'1.75"), Julius Dawoodtabar (31'4"), and Michael Bomar (30'3"). In discus, Gerardo Becerra took 2nd with a throw of 127'2". Also competing in discus were Lincoln Guerrero (100'9"), John Westwood (100'3"), Julius Dawoodtabar (98'3"), Michael Bomar (87'6"), and Garno Amirian (71'3"). In hammer, Kevin Gomez took 2nd with a toss of 137'10" with Lincoln Guerrero finishing behind him with a PR of 121'11". Finally, in javelin, Julio Aguayo took 2nd with a PR of 148'10". Edward Jones took 5th with a throw of 127'10". Others taking part in javelin were Garno Amirian (89'3") and Michael Bomar (83'5").

On the women's side, Karla Sanchez won the 1500m race with a time of 5:04.30 and took 4th in the 800m race with a time of 2:30.5. Xinix Perla finished 10th in the 800m with a time of 2:45.57. In the 5000m, Destiny Lopez took 2nd with a time of 19:53.55. She was followed by Aleksandra Martinez who took 3rd with a time of 20:03.15 and Norma Martinez who took 6th with a time of 22:40.16. In the field events, Xochilt Monfil took 8th in the hammer with a toss of 105'0". She also had a toss of 75'8" in discus. The track and field team will have a BYE week before they kick off the Western State Conference Preliminaries on April 22 at College of the Canyons
