GCC Track & Field Teams compete in WSC Relays Feb. 17

The track team took part in the Western State Conference Relays this past Friday at Ventura College. On the men's side, the 4x100 relay team took sixth place with a time of 44.86. The 4x200 team finished in eighth place with a time of 1:39.20, with the 4x400 team taking fourth in a time of 3:41.49. The 4x800 team won with a time of 8:24.95. The men's distance medley relay also took first in a time of 10:39.19, with the sprint medley relay finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:39.93. In the open 200m, Kevin Valenzuela took 10th with a time of 27.66. In the field events, Kevin Gomez (46.19m) and Lincoln Guerrero (39.41m) took first and second place in the hammer for the second consecutive week. Gomez also took second in the shot put with a throw of 12.29m, while Guerrero took 16th in shot with a toss of 9.66m. John Westwood took 10th in shot put with a throw of 10.89m, and finished in 13th in discus with a throw of 30.28m. Julius Dawoodtabar took 11th in discus with a toss of 31.58m, and 14th in shot with a 10.29m toss. Zaven Shakenians finished 21st in shot put with a throw of 8.21m, and 15th in javelin with a 24.10m throw.

On the women's side, Destiny Lopez (18:40.76) and Samantha Medrano (18:48.30) took second and third, respectively, in the 5000m race. In the field events, Kaylyn Guerra took second in the discus with a 35.50m throw. She also took second place in the hammer with a toss of 32.37m, fourth in javelin with a 23.99m throw, and fifth in shot put with a toss of 9.52m. Vanessa Portillo took third in javelin with a throw of 30.78m and fourth in hammer with a throw of 31.37m. The team will travel to Antelope Valley College Friday, Feb. 24 for the Western State Conference South meet.
