Destiny Lopez and Julius Largaespada win So. Cal Titles in 1500 Meters May 12; Four GCC Track and Field Athletes qualify for State Championships May 19-20 in Modesto

The track and field team competed in the Southern California Regional Championships this past Friday, and it concluded with four athletes qualifying for the state meet in Modesto. Julius Largaespada was the Southern California champion in the 1500m, finishing in a time of 3:54.91. He also qualified in the 800m, taking 5th place in a time of 1:54.43. Destiny Lopez also took home the Southern California title in the 1500m with a time of 4:37.36, while also qualifying in the 5000m with a 4th place finish and a time of 18:07.98. In the throws, Kevin Gomez took 4th place in the hammer with a throw of 47.11m the week prior to secure his spot in the state meet. Vanessa Portillo was runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.57m to punch her ticket to Modesto. Kaylyn Guerra was the other athlete competing in the discus, and she fell just short of qualifying with a 9th place finish throw of 37.09m. Samantha Medrano also fell short of qualifying with an 11th place finish in the 5000m, which she ran in a time of 19:03.71. The four qualifiers will travel to Modesto for the California State Championships which will be held from May 19-20.
