The Vaqueros played three Western State Conference (WSC) opponents this past week with shutout losses to Bakersfield (BC), 9-0, and Antelope Valley (AVC), 8-0, on Monday and Wednesday respectively; and a 10-4 home loss to Canyons (COC) on Thursday. The lone bright spot came on Saturday with an 11-7 win against the Compton Tartars.
Valerie Juarez got the start in the circle going four strong innings to secure her second victory of the season while Annaliese Ruiz struck out four over three innings to register her team's first save. At the plate, Juarez went 1 for 3 with an RBI-single, drew a pair of walks, and scored twice, including on a passed ball. Catarina Anzalone and Taylor Bangs each scored twice and picked up an RBI a piece, but it was Breanna Payne who blew the game open in the sixth with a clutch bases-loaded single to drive in two. She ended her day 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored as well as two defensive gems at first base to end the threat from Compton in the second inning.
Against COC, Anzalone and Emma Mendoza recorded three hits a piece with Mendoza driving in two. Other offensive standouts this week were Tati Pisa with six hits including two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored; Nazzelli Zohrabian with six hits of her own including multiple-hit games against BC and AVC along with scoring three runs over the last two games; and Isabelle Mendoza with five hits.
GCC Softball (9-13 overall) will continue its WSC action on March 25 against LA Mission (game to be played across the street from Bishop Alemany HS); and at LA Valley on March 27. All conference games are scheduled to start at 2:30pm. The week will wrap up with a double header at Victor Valley on March 29 with the first game scheduled to begin at 12.
