The challenge of beating one of the top teams in the state in their own crossover event was taken on by the GCC Women's Basketball Team on Dec. 30 against Ventura College and the Lady Vaqs were up to the task as they beat the Pirates 53-44 on their home floor to improve to 10-4 this season. The win over Ventura, ranked No. 7 in the state, helped take the sting away from Glendale falling to Irvine Valley 54-53 the day before on Dec. 29.

Good shooting and a solid all-around effort on both sides of the floor showed in Glendale leading in all four quarters Friday including a 9-6 first quarter start and 25-19 advantage at halftime. Starting guard Maile Yamada led the Lady Vaqs with 15 points and three steals and Faith Boulanger and Tori Delacroix had 11 points each to pace the offense with Boulanger adding five rebounds and two blocked shots. Kaitlynn Key added added four assists and three steals and Jesni Cooper also had four assists.

GCC, ranked tied for 11th in the California Community College Women's Basketball Coached Association Southern Division poll, has won three straight WSC South Championships and starts defense of thier titles Wednesday Jan. 3 at Santa Monica College.
