GCC Women's Volleyball battles but drops two matches to L.A. Mission and Allan Hancock Colleges Sept. 25 and 27; start WSC play this week
A valiant effort for the GCC Women's Volleyball Team ended with a two-point loss to visiting Allan Hancock College in a five-game thriller Sept. 27, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 loss to drop the Lady Vaqs record to 3-8 this season. They fell to L.A. Mission College 3-0, 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
 
The Lady Vaqs took game one against Hancock 25-19 but could not overcome late game rallies by the visitors to drop games two and three but thanks to the play of sophomores Karina Biel and Poet Crum, took game four 25-21 to set the stage for an exciting fifth game to decide the outcome. GCC led early at 6-2 but Hancock evened up the game at 10-10 before squeezing out the next five points to win the game and the match 15-13.
 
Karina Biel led GCC with 18 kills and 19 digs and Poet Crum added eight kills, five assisted blocks, and three solo blocks. Houri Ghoustian and Sarai Ochoa had six kills each and Vanya Arakelian had 12 assists, 11 digs and three service aces.
 
Glendale starts Western State Conference play this week by hosting Santa Monica at 6 pm Wednesday, Oct. 2 in the Verdugo Gym and playing at College of the Canyons at 6 pm Friday, Oct. 4.
